With the exhibition Höhle, GUTS presents Philippe Durand’s work on the Chauvet cave for the first time in Germany. Discovered in France in 1994, the Chauvet cave is one of the major Paleolithic sites for cave paintings. Philippe Durand was one of the lucky few to be able to visit the original site and work in situ.
For his exhibition, Philippe Durand transforms the freight elevator that gives access to the GUTS exhibition space into a time travel experience. He confronts the modern principles contained in the elevator, its right angles, and metal surfaces, with large-format photographs from Chauvet. In the elevator, views of the cave and its ornaments scroll past, as if in a giant view-master.
In the space itself, the undulating curtain in the shape of a digestive tube already evokes the principle of terrestrial or human entrails. Durand’s photographs using experimental stare-reap technology for relief printing are presented on a honeycomb cardboard display, alongside Grilles, a series of marble pebbles exposed with photosensitive emulsion.
